ART IN BLOOM

Had an amazing time helping Kaki with an exhibit for this year's Art in Bloom at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The theme was "The Grande Dame is Turning 100" in honor of NOMA's centennial year.

Our interpretation revolved around the romantic idea of a true southern lady coming in from a day in her wild garden and resting her belongings on a table. We played off oversized scale and created a huge hat out of woven kraft paper, which we sewed into shape. We also created crazy rope from tissue paper + books, which was wound with string and fabric. Kaki then wove an amazing beehive for our Grande Dame Gardner. *Apologies for the poor picture quality :( *

The exhibit will be on from now through the weekend.

Blog hiatus is gladly coming to an end, as I settle into Nola life.

Moving around so much has actually left me with a funny nagging feeling of "Am I actually going to stay in one place!?" I do miss Paris dearly, but it just takes a little Mardi Gras to melt my heart for New Orleans. It's impossible not to lose yourself in the sounds of the marching bands, smiles of the crowds and the taste of fried chicken. This city really is Magic.

Ended out the parades with Zulu yesterday.

Waffle Quest

Just one more food post! I swear I'm eating carrots for the next month straight.

I've openly declared my love for pancakes, well I'm also partial to it's close cousin the waffle. With my parents in town, I took the opportunity to go on a glorified waffle expedition, AKA a trip to Belgium.

Together we embarked on a search for the elusive (not so much, I ate 4 of em') liege waffle. Before leaving, a dear friend sat me down and schooled me about what to look out for - Forget those square traditional waffles - head straight towards the irregular shaped ones + make sure they're FRESH! So we made our way through Bruges and Brussels, seeing the sights, filling our bellies and washing it all down with some Kriek.

Well with a limited time schedule, but careful consideration - I can say hands down most delicious + freshest liege waffle I tasted during my stay came from vitalgaufre.

Living in London last year, I stumbled across Brompton Cemetery while walking around. In the middle of the full, hectic city laid this tranquil place. Although at first it seems a bit morbid, the deeper you walk inside, you immediately feel a sense of peace. Surrounded by a wealth of history and stories that are lifetimes away, the cemetery is ironically very filled with life... people stroll through with dogs, jog and read on benches.

It's not The Tower or Big Ben, but if you find yourself in London on nice day, it's worth a wander...

New Work - Parsons Paris

I've been working with Parsons Paris these last couple months to design + develop a summer site showcasing their classes. In addition we worked in a simple cart to make the overall summer abroad experience easy + inviting. Much like Paris is the backdrop to the school, I've attempted to translate the same feeling on the site. I couldn't be happier with the outcome!

Carnival

Feeling a little homesick for New Orleans, missing out on all the Saints celebrations + another Mardi Gras. We packed up our bags + headed over to Venice to fill the Carnival void!

Venice did not disappoint...we caught the very start of the celebrations, we threw on some masks + ran into various mini-marching groups along the way. We traded our usual Mardi Gras beer for wine + tasted some amazing local food! We ended up stumbling upon a little oesteria, Ai Rusteghi, serving up some heavenly little fresh paninis (I'm a sucker for miniature sized foods). Venice is enchanting, leaving me eager to see more of Italy...

I think I have openly declared my love for all food...Recently I got the chance to test out my french food skills! My mama is visiting Paris - so we decided to try a cooking class. If you ever pop over to Paris - check out cookn' with class, which I can't recommend enough.

The morning started off with Market visit where we were schooled in everything from stinky cheese to Israeli artichokes(yum). We got to pick a custom menu + continued to cook up a storm with our fantastic guide - chef Pino. Full belly, great day.

Pancake-less in Paris

Well the Sunday hunt for freshly cooked pancakes is serious work. For the late-risers the few precious locations that dish out this American delicacy are overtaken by long lines, which when combined with the freezing temperatures results in a breakfast white flag...

So we opted for falafel, yummy, but definitely not a pancake. I'm so sentimental for breakfast, it's my favorite meal of the day, the thought of skipping straight to lunch always upsets me just a bit. But today I took one for the team (aka my husband who loves lunch-time). This fight is not over though - I'm setting my alarm at an absurd hour next Sunday - I'll let you know how it works.

In Colombia for the holidays enjoying some quality time with mi familia and stuffing my face with arepas on a daily basis. Besides enjoying the a nice little rest and soaking up the holiday spirit, I have managed to eat an astounding amount of barbecue. No complaints here, the standard feast includes a heaping amount of guacamole, fresh grilled plantains, salted papas, a nice chunk of corn and meaaaaat!!! (view exhibit A)

I had the opportunity to spend a lovely afternoon with my teacher Henri Matchavariani in his Paris studio or Atelier. It's always so interesting to step inside a creative space, it definitely plays an essential role in the artistic process.

It was a real treat to take a closer look at his oodles of work, check out his library, and enjoy some apple tart...Henri's graceful strokes are inspiring and he's truly a great teacher.

Sundays are sacred. The day usually begins by burrowing into the sheets for as long as possible, followed by slumping out of bed at the last possible moment + sitting down for a proper breakfast. No rushing to classes, no worries about clients e-mailing, no nothing.

The best thing about the Sunday's here in Paris - is that they are all of the above, plus the open-air markets! This might be one of my favorite parts of my new Parisian life...and besides the regular fare from the boulangerie or patisserie, the flea markets are open for the picking.

This morning, I took a stroll with my buddy Chase through the Sunday flea market in the south of the city. I felt like I was walking through a treasure chest, such beautiful interesting objects everywhere I turned...

When I grow up...

My mind has been swirling lately... living in Paris is overwhelming inspiring and having the opportunity to push myself at school has been eye opening. With that in mind - I'm anticipating the next steps, wherever the wind blows me... I just want to make + share beautiful things.

Fingers crossed - we shall see...in the meantime, perhaps I can climb into the suitcase of this lucky man. What an A-M-A-Z-I-N-G gig!

Premiere Vision

Yesterday I had the opportunity of attending Premiere Vision. There were oodles + oodles of textiles (as you can imagine). One could easily spend days strolling through the exhibition center and not see half of it. It was a great introduction to commercial textiles.

I have to say by far my favorite part was hands-down Textprint, where newly graduated designers display their fresh work. All of the 24 students work was exceptional, from the graphic patterns, intricate weaving and sophisticated color palettes - it was truly an inspiration overload.

A Brief Intermission

Gosh- I've been a stinky lil' updater. Honestly, I've been deep in the grips of everyday life and adjusting to the many new lovely changes that surround me.

One of those changes is settling into my new life here in Paris, which includes, stuffing my face with baguettes, drinking far too much wine and learning to maneuver my way through the red tape. I've also just re-entered the school scene! I'll be spending the year at Parsons Paris focusing on textile arts. I hope to start posting some of newly discovered skills...stay tuned!

Once upon a time in a town called Rüst...

Pardon my lack of posting, if anyone out there in the great wide inter-web has noticed a complete halt of posting. The summer has swept me away - far far away from dependable internet connections.

While I've been trekkin' around - I came across a little slice of wonder I wanted to share. The charming town of Rüst in Austria looks like every other little town - cobblestone streets, brightly colored houses, but all it takes is a quick glance up and something strange catches your eye....GIANT STORK NESTS! The skyline is filled with these huge silhouettes of bulky nests, with these large graceful birds poking out.

They fly Africa every summer and nest in Rüst - so if you ever find yourself meandering through Austria, check out this little gem.

There is something magical about Europe in the summer time. The open squares, grand architecture, museums and sipping wine at open cafes - it's a bit dreamy. We're taking full advantage of our geographical location + going on some adventures. Austria is the first stop, I was here many years ago and was very eager to return.

In addition to the deep history, I have to be honest the other major plus (and potential danger) is the foooood! I'm a girl who carefully plots the next meal - I live to eat. Being a super-duper foodie , this is a tempting place to be....they have cafes dedicated to selling just perfect little sacher torts and mozartkugeln everywhere you turn. I've also been having my fill of the grand Austrian schnitzel!! I think I just gained weight writing this....

London Town

Whenever possible, our feet are the preferred mode of transportation. We took full advantage of the sun shining in the sky this week with one epic walk. London is enchanting in the summer time, smiling people, full sidewalks, outdoor dining and all the green...

My hubs + I live in the southwest so we began by wandering through Fulham / up to South Kennsington / with grande-finale stroll through the lovely Hyde Park. After this 6 hour escapade we hopped on the Marble Arch Tube - to give our feet some deserved rest. Here's some highlights:

SEW the Possiblities...

When I was a just a little lady in high school I had the chance to take part in a class called Project Discovery. Nope- this class did not involve spacesuits or constellations, but rather in retrospect, a very progressive golden opportunity. The participating students had the chance to ask a question, any question (appropriate for an upstanding lady attending an all girl catholic high school) and then actively pursue an answer for a year + a half - resulting in a thesis paper + presentation of your discoveries in front of a panel of experts in the subject.

I've always loved to make things with my hands + I had just discovered Built by Wendy - I decided that my year + half would consist of learning how to sew + constructing a piece of haute couture (don't laugh). The result was one custom designed and constructed prom dress and yes indeed a wearable art piece (a fish skirt with hand painted scales + netting top - oh goodness).

Although I've since forgotten how to properly thread a bobbin + traded in sewing needles for a computer mouse - I think I'm ready to sit back down and give it a go. A spiffy new sewing machine should do the trick + Built by Wendy is still making me want to sew my heart out almost 10 years later!

Backpack Love

I was sitting here thinking about where in the world we were last year at this time...

Singapore. Lovely Singapore. We arrived as weary wide-eyed travelers - after being nomads for a couple months already. This was our first stop + starting point for South east Asia. There was a feeling of this tangible excitement as we wandered the streets, soaked in the new atmosphere + smells - as the soundtrack for the Beach played on loop in our heads. It was hot, sticky + we were ready to roam...

Letterpress Heaven

So my good friend + insane designer - Ness sent some photos over my way of a wedding invitation we worked on together. After oodles of hard work - I was über excited to see the final product!

The main invite was a letterpress poster (approx. 8x19") white ink on navy paper that folded down into a custom letter pressed self-folding envelope. It had custom designed patterns + type throughout. I wish I could letterpress the world!

Lost in Translation

Since crossing the pond - I've been working my way through some new vocabulary. I've spent many trips to the grocery looking for cilantro - only to leave in confused, frustrated and cilantro-less.

This went on + on until I finally figured out that cilantro is coriander (a truly Finkle is Einhorn kind of moment). Since I'm so entertained by these little differences in vernacular - I've been compiling lists of all my new vocabulary. I wanted to start sharing + have been working on some illustrations - we can start with some veg.

SUGAR + EGGS

I love to cook. I love to watch shows about cooking. Love to read about cooking. Love to eat what I cook. I think you get it.

Since moving to England I've become hooked on the show Come Dine with Me (careful when you click on the link - you might get stuck there for a couple hours). The idea is five strangers cook for one another each night for a week + score. Simple, but with the addition of clever commentary, heavy alcohol consumption and the occasional tussle, the outcome is highly entertaining.

I've been thinking I don't really have a competitive dinner menu. I have been working through this + one happy husband later - I think I've got a winner for the dessert (or pudding as it's called here)...Homemade Meringue stuffed with whip cream + fresh berries. YUM.

My devastatingly handsome husband has been studying so very hard - took some time out to sample my creation...

Homemade Meringue Stuffed with Whip Cream + Fresh Berries
2 egg whites (make sure there are NO egg yolks or won't thicken)
1/2 cup sugar
non-stick oven paper

berry whipped cream
1 cup double cream
handful of fresh chopped berries

Heat the oven to 225 degrees Fahrenheit - crack egg white into large mixing bowl - add half of the sugar - start whipping (I don't have an electric mixer - unless you want a frustratingly intense 45 min. whipping work-out - I highly recommend an electric mixer (lucky you). Whip the egg white + sugar - gradually add in the rest of the sugar. The mixture will get nice and thick (should be shiny too). You can stop mixing when the mixture sticks to the bowl when turn upside down.

Drop teaspoons of the mixture onto baking sheet with a non-stick piece of paper. The mixture should make about 12-14 meringue. Pop in the heated oven for 45 min. Turn off the oven at the end of that time + leave in the oven for another hour.

Meanwhile I whip double cream(I do this by hand - will pay with killer wrist cramps!). Cut up fresh berries - I use black berries + strawberries. Mix into whipped cream.

Take the fresh Meringue out of the oven - stuff em' + then eat em'!

While working as a member of The Canary Collective - I got the amazing opportunity to concept and design this lovely piece. The outcome was a super chic, sophisticated brochure (covered in creamy touché paper). The recipient is also left with a swanky set of custom Ritz playing cards - which they will hopefully utilize in the luxury clubhouse (when they purchase their condo).
